First of all, this was an 'upgrade' to me. I had been using PowerDVD 15 and obtained the latest edition of the software from Amazon for review. The previous version had some rough edges but basically worked as advertised. Version 17 introduces some new features but comes across more like BETA software than a finished product.
Let's get to the main problem straight away. PowerDVD 17 will not play movies on my computer that played perfectly well using PowerDVD 15. Specifically, it does not seem to want to play Blu-Ray discs or .iso files. Upon 'upgrading' to the new version I immediately found that most of my movies that played fine using Ver. 15 will not open at all any longer. There was no real explanation other than that my graphics card was not able to play Blu-Ray discs (see screen shot). Using the company's Blu-Ray Advisor software to check for problems there was nothing at all mentioned about problems with the video card, only that my display had somehow suddenly become 'HDCP non-compliant'. Both are rather bogus claims as these movies played perfectly well only minutes earlier using version 15 of the same software.
Another problem I came across with the software was its claimed capability to copy and store videos from YouTube. None of the YouTube videos I attempted to download would work. After letting the software attempt to download from YouTube for over an hour I finally gave up and tried closing the program. I got the message (see screen shot) that the software was still trying to download the videos. This happened on repeated attempts. These were only 5 minute long videos, so it isn't a downloading problem. It's a software problem. Oddly, I was able to download and save the same videos from YouTube using a simple browser plug-in.
I WAS able to play regular DVDs and DVD .iso files with the software, but nothing in Blu-Ray. Quite a disappointment.
For this test I am running Windows 10 x64 Professional with all of the latest patches, 8 GB of DDR3 RAM, a quad core AMD A6-3400M CPU, Toshiba internal Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Disc player, 250GB WD SSD primary drive, AMD Radeon HD 6520G GPU. These should all meet or exceed minimum specs for the software.
UPDATE: I did file a trouble ticket as the manufacturer requested. The answer I got made absolutely no sense and suggested that the movies I was trying to play would not work because of a type of external, non-HDMI compliant cable that I am NOT using. It's a laptop, so I am not even sure how a display cable would factor into the equation. Oddly, the reply to my inquiry was addressed to Donald. Who the h3II is Donald?!!? I guess that my only option at this point is to downgrade from ver 17 back to ver 15, which actually works.
